SLAMPPLite 1.0

Request for Comments (Dec 10, 2005):
Recently one user has reported to me that SLAMPPLite stops to work on his computer when it comes to the line concerning XAMPP during start process. No crash given, just stop reacting. Does anybody have the same problem?

Thank you for your comments.

As I ever promised before, a lite version of SLAMPP is now available for public download. It contains only essential server applications and other tools that will support your web development work. To keep SLAMPPLite small and make it easy to update, I’ve chosen to include a ready made solution called XAMPP, developed by nice people at Apache Friends. One of its founder, Kai ‘Oswald’ Seidler, has let me know that I may include XAMPP to this release. Thanks Oswald for your warm welcome. I really appreciate that. :)

What you will see in SLAMPPLite shall give you an idea how the next ‘big’ SLAMPP would look like, although not all features are shown. A new linux kernel 2.6.14.3 has been used. To compile all things into a live CD, I also updated the linux live scripts which will be available for you to use as well. You can use it to edit or remaster SLAMPPLite if you have intention to do so in the future. Furthermore, one of the benefits having XAMPP on board is that you will always be updated with the latest development of softwares included in SLAMPPLite. So, you don’t have to be worried about doing it yourself.

I was planning to re-compile SLAMPPLite each time a new version of XAMPP is released. But as I realize that I myself don’t have much time to do this work and at the same time don’t want you to be upset, I promise to make a new release every two months. How does it sound to you? :) I hope you don’t mind, will you?

Alright, all that being said, without further delay you can get SLAMPPLite through this link:

Read the changelog here.

One happy news for us, the development of SLAMPPLite is now supported by SourceForge.net. Something that the standard SLAMPP actually needs. But due to some reasons SF.net has rejected my application, so temporary we have to be self-sufficient in distributing the standard SLAMPP. So far everything just goes well. Nothing to complain. Thanks to all parties that show their support to this project. Without you guys, SLAMPP will not be growing like this and gaining its popularity.

Enjoy SLAMPPLite!

Update (Dec 09, 2005):
- The Linux live scripts that have been used to compile SLAMPPLite 1.0 are now available for download.
- DistroWatch.com has mentioned SLAMPPLite on its frontpage today. Read the news over here. Thanks Ladislav. :)

  1. Great news! I just hope that you won’t be using lampp or xampp on your standard distro as it is not as global as installing Apache, MySQL, etc. in the root filesystem.

  2. No, it won’t happen on standard distro. SLAMPPLite is only intended to be your showcase box. When you have something to display to your users/clients, a small version of SLAMPP would be very handy. Therefore I do not recommend to use SLAMPPLite for production use. Just use standard distro instead. :)

Thank you Kemas! Will move my demo disk to the Lite tomorrow and give back comments. I use the standart distro now to show my work and don’t use X apps except Firefox. If the Lite is for show only is it possible to cut some more applications, like antiviruses, bittorrent, multimedia and etc - they are not used when I work will client showing and filling web site/intranet site. It would be best to fit it to a 200MB mini CD disk.

Have you ever thought about making an Asterisk server (www.astlinux.org, http://asteriskathome.sourceforge.net), it would become a super CD if we could show and customise ‘voice apps’ along with web apps at the same time ;)?

Anyway you did a good job, thank you again!

  4. Thank you Shakhruz for your feedback. Yes, you’re right. The reason why I included such applications as because I wanted people to have fun and get a (almost) complete system and at the same time they could do their web development on SLAMPP.

But you gave me a good point though. So, in the next release I will reduce the amount of applications and remove the probably unused ones.

    Once again thanks.

  6. Yes. :)

Just click on HD Installation icon on the desktop. It will start a program that will guide you in installing SLAMPP.

In a response to your request (about the XAMPP stopping and not loading etc.) I would like to inform you that I have not encountered any issues with it whatsoever. Your distro works nicely. Great job and I hope to see more updates in the future.

XFCE may need a little tweaking (some of the settings don’t seem to change after I played with them…) Nothing major. No need for X in server settings anyways.

    Thanks

  8. Thank you Distrofreak for your comment.

It seems this only happens to that user at the moment. So far I haven’t heard any complaint from other users as well.

You’e right, XFCE needs to be tweaked a little bit. I hope I could address this issue in the next release.

Hi Kemas! I failed in making a LiveUSB with the MySlax Creator. Slax forum says that the Creator does not work with Slax Popcorn. How to make a LiveUSB with SlamppLite?

  10. I’m not sure about it Shakhruz as I never try to make a live USB with SLAMPP. I think you should digg some information on SLAX forum how to install SLAX on USB. The nature of SLAMPP is pretty the same as SLAX, so if someone has succeeded to do that, it is very likely that you could do the same thing. But, please keep in mind that the nature of each computer is not the same, so take that into account as well.

I hope I could make SLAMPP installable on a usb stick someday. :)
